The recently released Intergovernmental Panel on Climate (IPCC) Sixth Assessment reports climate change will impact wellbeing and health.
It is worth us reflecting on both the mitigating and adaptive measures museums could take. Solutions highlighted by the report suggest museums in urban areas may wish to consider the use of green/blue (nature/water) infrastructure to facilitate cooling, and improve social infrastructure for low-income and marginalised communities. The latter point is also addressed by the OECD’s Better Living Framework under the Housing indicator.
In short, the IPCC sees a decrease in quality of life arising from Climate Change and one of the policy dimensions for museums is understanding the role they can play in mitigating or adapting to the new context.
And of course museums have the power to tell stories and engage the public with the issues, challenges and potential solutions through their exhibition programme.
