Civic Contribution: Democracy Gym at the Museum

Exercise is a good way to improve your wellbeing … including exercising our democratic muscles.

The German Bundeskunsthalle shows an exhibition All In! Re-Designing Democracy that features a gym to exercise your democratic muscles. The exhibition is built around 10 democratic “muscles” or skills that citizens need to live democracy. In a playful way, visitors can experience what it means to be empathetic, to show tenacity, to negotiate compromises, to actively listen or to allow differences of opinion. The exhibition also shows ideas of democracy from the past and present, how people have fought for democracy, as well as society's current push for more participation.

The museum exercised its own democratic muscle and established a Society Forum consisting of 35 randomly selected citizens, who help democratise and open up the museum.

We think this is a great example for a museum’s contribution to the wellbeing dimension of Civic Contribution, which we define  as: “Generating a sense of belonging and contributing to the local community" in the QWB Lab Wellbeing Framework.
