Cities are becoming smart and technology is permeating our lives. So how can art organisations interact and take part in shaping future Smart Cities and show their contribution to quality of life? While at times overlooked, there is an obvious interconnection between arts and Smart Cities, suggests a researcher at the Arts Management and Technology Laboratory at Carnegie Mellon University. Managers of arts institutions, she states, must therefore consider how they fit into the discussion and development of the future of Smart Cities around these roles:

• Celebrating the unique strengths of a city
• An economic driving force
• Influencing people’s information behaviour
• Imaginative processes of engagement and production of future scenarios
• Being an essential presence for increasing a city’s liveability
